Enjoy More Runtime, Less Downtime

Monday December 29, 2008
Over the weekend my son and I got a bunch of our RCs out and took them to the park. These were all hobby-grade electrics. I like electric RCs but our day in the park reminded me of one of the reasons I prefer nitro.

Runtime.

One of the frustrations with electric RC vehicles is that you typically only get 10-15 minutes per battery pack. It seems you can never go as long as you want on a single charge. So if you want to spend a long time driving and less time waiting for batteries to charge, make sure you have several (as in 4 or 5) battery packs charged up and ready for a quick switch out. But don't forget to have a few minutes of rest after about 30 minutes of running. That motor needs to cool off or you risk damaging it or having parts melt (the reason one of my son's RCs is no longer operational). Of course if you have several different vehicles you're playing with, you'll need to be sure you have multiples of the right battery pack for each one. Ouch! That adds up fast.

Or, get a nitro RC and just refill the tank now and then.
