Buying an RC for an 8 Year Old

He doesn't want to spend money on a toy that will break after one day but also doesn't want to invest a lot in a kids toy. Are there specific brands or specific toys (suitable for 8 years olds) that you'd recommend? Tell us!
A few random thoughts I'll throw out here. I'd take a look at cars and trucks from some of the better known toy manufacturers such as Nikko or New Bright or Jada Toys. I've found them to be generally tougher and more dependable. If he's running on any grass, then the cars might not be able to handle it (too low to the ground) but a monster truck can go on pavement and grass. Stay away from the cheap knock-off toys you might find in some grocery stores or $1 stores. Too hit or miss with them.
