Definition: Screws with a flat end and closely spaced threads used in metal parts that often have their own threads in the screw holes are known as machine screws or small bolts. Unlike the pointed self-tapping screws, machines screws don't usually make their own holes but are instead inserted into already existing screw holes which may be threaded or unthreaded. Machine screws come in many lengths and widths depending on the application. They may have flat or rounded heads. Small nuts are often used with machine screws to fasten them in place.
The machine screws and nuts used in RC vehicles are often quite tiny. When working with these tiny screws it's often necessary to use tweezers or small needlenose pliers to get them into place. A magnetic-tipped screwdriver can help.
Thread lock, a type of adhesive, may sometimes be used on some machine screws to provide extra gripping power so that vibrations and collisions don't loosen the fasteners.
