Definition: An off-road tire is designed to provide traction or grip on unpaved surfaces including dirt, mid, and grass.
An off-road tire for hard-packed dirt is usually a medium to soft rubber compound tire with shallow treads or a "bowtie" pin tread. For loose dirt, mud, and grass, knobbier off-road tires with deep treads provide better grip and better performance. For these softer off-road conditions use the medium to hard rubber compound tires.
A taller tire wall with tire inserts may absorb bumps and landings from jumps better which is one reason you'll typically see off-road tires with higher tire walls.
