After a long awaited release, the 1:8 DuraTrax Warhead 4WD Nitro Off-Road Monster Truck blew into stores and flew off shelves. With a street price of around $450, it has since proven itself worth the wait. Previous monster trucks have boasted impressive appearance, speed, and agility. However, the DuraTrax research team assessed the factors that others failed to acknowledge and compensated for the lack of adjustability, difficult maintenance, and high roll over tendency of monster trucks.
The Warhead is an advancement in RC monster truck design. It comes Ready-to-Run with quality features that are only available as hop-ups or modifications with other RC monster trucks.
Two Suspension Modes:
Most monster trucks only provide slight adjustment to the suspension and ground clearance (at most an inch of differance). Through simple adjustments to the suspension the Warhead can wage war in racing and dominate the competition in harsh off-road conditions. In "Rumble Mode" the Warhead has an outstanding 3.75 inches of ground clearance; allowing the driver to clear obsticles that the competition would have to drive around for fear of high centering and losing precious time in a race.
In "Race Mode" the Warhead drops to 1.6 inches; providing optimal ground clearance for high speed without having to worry about roll-overs. The low stance and low center of gravity lets the Warhead take tight turns at full speed. The engine, transmission, and fuel tank are mounted low in the chassis to help hold it on track during high-speed turns. Within the two modes, there are 63 individual shock positioning options providing a wide range to work with depending on the track conditions.
Modular and Adjustable:
The modular design of the Warhead allows entire sections to be removed easily, making it more maintenance friendly. The Warhead also offers more potential for driver adjustability than other trucks, as well as fine-tuning for any type of track or terrain.
- Four roll center options
- 2-Speed Transmission with adjustable shift point
- Flexibiity to use a starter box (the chassis is designed to be fly-wheel accessible)
- Pre-mounted and Glued Tires that are T-Maxx and Savage compatible
- Aluminum roll bar (to protect engine and fuel tank)
- 8 metal pre-oiled shocks
- Chamber links
- Front / Rear toe-in
- Steering Ackerman
- Body Mounts
- Slipper clutch
Dual Fuel Tanks:
One thing that Duratrax meant well by is the 250cc fuel tank which is composed of a large tank and a small tank. Unfortunately, some drivers have noticed that when the fuel gets low, the Warhead begins to sputter out and die with fuel in the tank. This s due to a back-pressure problem that the Duratrax testers overlooked. To fix this problem, simply remove the smaller of the 2 fuel tanks. This will allow for enough backpressure to force fuel through the line as long as there is fuel in the tank.
The Warhead boasts the powerful .27 SuperTigre engine. This Big Block produces 2.5 Horsepower and features a machined aluminum heat sink head, ABC construction, and a metal carb.
The radio transmitter is a 3-channel pistol grip style made by Futaba for the Warhead. A 2-position switch is mounted on the top of the controller for quick shifting from forward to reverse. The operator also gets fine trim options for the steering and throttle as well as an LED battery status indicator.
Unlike most RC vehicles that come with reverse capability, the Warhead's patented reverse mechanism requires no reversing clutch, using steel reversing gears and a positive lock with no slipping. The differental gears, bevel gears, drive pinion and ring gear are all made of durable metals to minimize breaking, wear and tear.
