What's The Difference Between A Mini And A Micro RC Airplane?

By , About.com Guide

Question: What's The Difference Between A Mini And A Micro RC Airplane?
There are no set rules. Micro is usually smaller than mini... but not always.
Answer: It can vary from one manufacturer to the next; but, a mini RC airplane would typically be one with a wingspan between 10 and 20 inches. A micro RC airplane would be under 10". There are even some micro RC airplanes as tiny as 5" or less, with quite a few micro RC airplanes weighing in at a fraction of an ounce.

Manufacturers may not all agree on mini vs. micro though, or may use descriptors such as "super mini" (is that a large mini or a micro?) or "ultra micro" for planes of varying sizes.

A lot (but not all) of the mini and micro RC airplanes are intended for indoor flight. A better measure of airplane size and suitablility for different indoor or outdoor spaces is the wingspan and speed not the mini or micro designation.
