Guide Review - iRod DeskTop Toy

After a quick download and installation process, iRod offers four modes: Explore, Mouse Chase, Auto Pilot, and iDrive.

Mouse Chase is my favorite and the most fun. Move your mouse around the desktop and iRod follows your movements, driving toward wherever your mouse goes — kind of like an RC controller. If you are familiar with using graphics programs to make desktop wallpapers for your PC, for a little challenge you could make a race track for your iRod and lead it around the desktop course with your mouse.

If you want more control, iDrive lets you use up, down, left, right keys to control iRod's general direction. Other keys make iRod jump, brake, do wheelies, turn its lights off and on, and sound the horn. Spread a few icons across your desktop and create an instant obstacle course.

The main screen has gauges to show your speed, fuel, boost, shocks, tires, and oil. Just like a real car or an RC car, the iRod needs maintenance after a hard day on the desktop. The shocks, tires, oil, and fuel can be refueled by left clicking on them with your mouse to keep your iRod in top perfomance.

It's not fancy and it's not likely to make you a better RC driver, but it's free and it's fun. So the next time you're not having a good day at work or it's just horrible weather outside, start up the ol' iRod and let your imagination run wild.
